Season Preview: Charlotte Bobcats

The Charlotte Bobcats have a short history, dating back to 2004. The Bobcats are an expansion team that replaced Charlotte’s old team, the Charlotte Hornets, when they left for New Orleans. What the Bobcats may lack in experience is more than made up for by the experience of their owners, such as Michael Jordan and Nelly. You know the Bobcats must be special based on their notable owners.

Even though North Carolina did not have access to our Inside The Name series, it seems that they followed our guidlines quite well, having both a basketball team and a football team named after ferocious felines.

Charlotte’s cat-themed team finished 4th in their division in their first season with a record of 18-64. The Bobcats continued to improve until their ’07-’08 season; this was the first season that their record was not better than their previous year’s record. In 2008, Larry Brown became head coach. Brown has an outstanding amount of experience in coaching and is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame.

The Bobcats narrowly missed a playoff debut in their ’08-’09 season as they were four games out of eighth place. Some changes for this year are their 2009 NBA Draft acquisitions, Gerald Henderson and Derrick Brown. Additionally, they gained Tyson Chandler in a trade with the New Orleans Hornets.  Both Henderson and Brown showed promise in the Bobcat’s preseason opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Although they lost 92-87, the Bobcats certainly showed signs of potential. I expect to see the Bobcats once again challenge for a spot in the playoffs. With the addition of Henderson, Brown, and Chandler, the Bobcats may see their best season yet.
